8 Powerful Ways To Boost Your Immune System

Updated: Mar 17, 2020

“You have the power to take your health into your own hands; you have the power to prevent disease and help your body discover what it means to feel your best.” – Dr Mark Hyman.

The team at Solar Springs have put together a helpful list of ways you can take your health into your own hands and boost your immune system.

Focus on eating well: Reduce sugar and processed food as they suppress your immune system. The key here is to eat an abundance of fresh produce in a variety of different colours. Added bonuses for eating clean, organic produce as this reduces the toxic load on your liver (which may already be burdened if it is fighting a virus.) Raw garlic is also known for its anti-viral properties, so boost your intake of this powerful herb.

Stay hydrated: This may seem simple, but it can make a big difference. If you drink less than 8 glasses of liquids a day try sipping on herbal teas or infusing your water with fresh fruit and herbs (such as mint & berries or orange & thyme) to help you reach your daily quota.

Exercise: Move your body in ways you love, but not too much as over-exercising places additional stress on the body which will suppress your immune system.

Get out in nature: Besides helping you feel grounded, spending time in nature has proven immune boosting benefits that are amplified when you enjoy exposure to direct sunlight as you will also get a good dose of Vitamin D.

Focus on relaxation techniques: Dial up your mindfulness practices and try meditation, take a bath, burn essential oils, take adaptogen herbs, journal, read a book… do whatever calms down your nervous system. Also, be mindful of your screen time, switching off technology for a few hours or even a day (switch-off Sunday!) can make a big difference to how you feel.

Sleep: Enjoy getting good quality sleep (7-9hrs a night) as this is the time that your body naturally fights off the invaders (pathogens, microbes) and is able to repair itself.

Intermittent fasting: Stop eating a few hours before bed and try delaying your breakfast to allow for a 12-14hr overnight fast. When your body isn’t focused on digestion it can instead direct energy into cleaning up the body.

Supplements: Taking supplements can be a great way to up the ante and give your body the extra support it needs. Vitamin C, Vitamin D3 and Zinc are immune boosting superheroes, and a good quality multivitamin may also be supportive. Speak to your Naturopath about the products and quantities best suited to you.
